Couples Counseling in Roseville, CA

Every couple hits rough patches. But when communication breaks down, resentment builds, or you feel more like roommates than partners, those rough patches can start to feel permanent. Couples counseling isn’t about assigning blame — it’s about understanding the patterns that keep you stuck and building new ways to connect.

At Advantage Mental Health, we specialize in helping couples navigate conflict, rebuild trust, and create relationships that feel safe and fulfilling.

Common Reasons Couples Come to Us

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy. People come to us when communication has broken down and conversations turn into arguments, trust has been damaged by infidelity, dishonesty, or broken promises, emotional distance has grown and you feel disconnected, you’re stuck in the same fights over and over, intimacy has decreased or disappeared, you’re navigating a major transition like having a baby, blending families, or relocating, co-parenting conflicts are affecting your family, or you want to strengthen your relationship before problems escalate.

How Couples Therapy Works

Our therapists use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most researched and effective models for couples. EFT focuses on the emotional bonds between partners — the attachment needs that drive behavior in relationships. When those needs feel unmet, we protect ourselves in ways that create distance. EFT helps you understand your partner’s emotional world, recognize the negative cycles that keep you stuck, express needs and vulnerabilities in ways your partner can hear, and rebuild trust and secure connection.

We also draw from Gottman Method concepts and communication skills training when appropriate. Sessions are collaborative — both partners are heard, and the therapist acts as a guide, not a referee.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session typically includes both partners together. We’ll ask about your relationship history, what brought you to therapy, and what you each hope to get out of it. Many couples feel some relief just from having a structured space to talk. After the first session, your therapist will outline a treatment approach tailored to your specific dynamics.

We accept Partnership HealthPlan of California (Carelon Behavioral Health), Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal, and private pay with sliding scale. Therapy through Medi-Cal has no copay and no out-of-pocket cost to you. Ready to get started? Call us at 916-238-8015 or visit advantagementalhealth.org to schedule your first appointment.
